My husband and I had our honeymoon there at the old Sea Cliff resort in May of 1989. It was a beautiful place. I think it was a month later when the hurricane hit. Such a shame. I have a picture with my husband and me on that concrete lookout. We're both holding our half full rum punches.

I've probably been on more cruise ships than anyone reading this, yet never been on a cruise. My dad ran a ship chandlery that had a monopoly on selling liquor to the cruise ships in the early '80s, that I used to spend my afternoons after school doing my homework at, that was located at the last building on the Havensite dock (has Senior Frogs painted on its roof). After growing up on the island and starting when I was 17 in late 1986, we used to roam Charlotte Amalie downtown streets at night bar hopping Coconuts, Rosie O'Grady's, The Ritz, Yesterdays, then to the Greenhouse at 10pm for the current live band, when everyone was partying in the islands. Since the bars closed at 2 AM we would go out to steal cars, usually rentals, and race across the island, afterward sometimes stripping them for parts. I've floored it in a brand new 1987 Accord LXi from the Fort all the way to Frenchtown one night easily doing 100mph, which was not unusual to do with stolen cars never mind the ones we sort of cared about, and I hold the record for most boats stolen in one night while alone; three - I took them to a birthday party. Ah Red Hook. Duffy's wasn't there in the 80s, but I did go into the parking lot a few times in my 9 years growing up there, up back was a salon I went to as a kid and there was always the Grateful Deli we used to go to once in a while. We used to play at the fort when we were kids. My family had a home a short walk from the old gun turret from 1959 - 2009. They've cleaned that up a lot.

Wow so weird seeing this. My family had a home on Water Island from 1959 till 2009. The old hotel now is a ruins site. Many cocktails there. They don't mention that Phillips landing is named after Walter Phillips who worked out the lease arrangement with the Federal government. Residents pais a lease fee to the feds until the lease was up and then we bought the land the house was on for pretty cheap. Walter started the hotel and had rental cottages up the old fort road. There's the family house just down the road from the old fort. So strange.

Island Beachcomber is the hidden jewel of the USVI. I hope it fares well thru Hurricane Irma
